The 10 Best Outdoor Activities Near Utah County
One of the most underappreciated things about living in Utah County is the access. Within an hour or two in any direction, you have world-class skiing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, climbing, and desert exploration. If you're considering a move to the area — or you've lived here and haven't explored your backyard — here are ten outdoor experiences worth making time for.
1
Timpanogos Cave National Monument
Located in American Fork Canyon, Timpanogos Cave is one of the most accessible cave systems in the national park network. The hike up to the cave entrance is moderately strenuous and rewards you with views of the canyon before you even go underground. Tours run spring through fall — book ahead in summer.
2
Mount Timpanogos Summit Hike
The crown jewel of Utah County hiking. The summit stands at 11,752 feet and the round trip runs 14–16 miles depending on your route. It's a legitimate mountain objective — start early, bring layers, and expect to earn the views. One of the most rewarding day hikes in the entire state.
3
Provo River Parkway Trail
A paved multi-use trail running along the Provo River from Utah Lake to Vivian Park in Provo Canyon. It's flat, accessible, and family-friendly — good for bikes, strollers, and casual walks. The canyon section is particularly scenic in fall when the cottonwoods turn.
4
Deer Creek Reservoir
About 20 minutes east of Provo, Deer Creek offers boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and some of the best windsurfing in the state. The reservoir is large enough to feel genuinely open, and the Wasatch backdrop makes it one of the more scenic spots in Utah County.
5
Sundance Mountain Resort
Robert Redford's resort at the base of Timpanogos offers skiing in winter and mountain biking, hiking, and lift-served trail access in summer. It's smaller and more intimate than Park City's resorts — which is actually part of the appeal. The outdoor amphitheater runs a summer concert series worth catching.
6
Utah Lake State Park
Utah's largest freshwater lake sits right at the western edge of Provo. It's underutilized relative to its size — boating, fishing, and bird watching are all excellent here. The lake hosts over 200 bird species and is a legitimate destination for birders in spring and fall migration.
7
Rock Canyon Park
Right at the mouth of Rock Canyon in northeast Provo, this is one of the most accessible climbing areas in the state — limestone sport routes within a 15-minute walk of the trailhead. Also a popular hiking and trail running destination with views over the Utah Valley.
8
Nebo Loop Scenic Byway
A 38-mile drive around Mount Nebo — the highest peak in the Wasatch Range — with access to hiking trailheads, aspen groves, and overlooks above 9,000 feet. In September and October the fall color along this route rivals anything in New England. A full day well spent.
9
Provo Canyon Road Cycling
Highway 189 through Provo Canyon is one of the premier road cycling routes in the state — gradual grade, paved shoulder, spectacular canyon walls, and a riverside path running parallel for mixed-use access. The canyon connects to Heber Valley for riders who want a longer route.
10
Spanish Fork River Trail System
Spanish Fork has invested significantly in its trail network along the Spanish Fork River. The system connects to larger regional trails and offers mountain biking, hiking, and horseback access through some of the quieter terrain in southern Utah County — often far less crowded than the canyon trails to the north.
